Well, the Thai new year celebration has come and gone. This has to be the world's largest water fight, and Chiang Mai is the place to be. We saw people starting to throw water as early as last Thursday, and it continued all through the weekend. Monday was the last day for the major water throwing, but the overall holiday atmosphere continued.
Songkran is not just about throwing water. It's a holiday which is steeped with much making merit and honoring your elders even though most young people don't do the traditional aspects. People may take sand to the neighborhood monastery to replace any sand they may have carried away on their shoe during the year. They use this sand to build stupa-shaped piles which they decorate with flags. They will also splash water on the Buddha images to clean them. They believe this will bring good luck and prosperity in the new year. They will also pay visits to the elderly...including family, friends, and neighbors.
